A stylist’s go-to tips for sorority recruitment outfits

Whether it’s finding the perfect wedding guest ensemble or picking out an outfit for a casual dinner at Superior Grill, being fashionable isn’t as effortless as it looks.

Now, try picking out three outfits for sorority recruitment during the hottest month of the year in Louisiana. That’s no simple task. Thankfully, Baton Rouge-born stylist Grayson Mann Wills (@styled_by_gray) knows a thing or two about sorority recruitment looks and is sharing her fashion tips and tricks for each round in the Q&A below.

Read on to get all the details and shop her recommendations.

Q: What bottom options do you recommend for philanthropy round?

A: Any clean, polished short should work as long as it’s not denim! Be sure to do the “sit test” to make sure that they aren’t too short or uncomfortable when sitting because it’s a long day. A fun printed short like this pair from Farm Rio or Zimmerman would be great.

Q: What dress styles do you recommend for sisterhood round?

A: Mini or knee-length sundresses are the move for this round. I would personally avoid midi dresses because the extra fabric will be too hot in August. I would lean toward a playful, printed dress like this Amanda Uprichard, Ulla Johnson or Rhode dress. Pro tip: patterns will hide any sweat marks better than a solid dress! Again, make sure it’s not too short and avoid cutouts or anything too revealing.

Q: What shoes should the potential new members wear throughout the week?

A: A comfortable sneaker or sandal will work well during the philanthropy round. Make sure that your sneakers are fresh and not already beaten up or dirty. For sisterhood and preference rounds, I recommend a low, comfortable heel like these Dolce Vita options in neutral and metallic.

Q: What are some staple jewelry pieces the girls can re-wear all week?

A: Charm necklaces are all of the rage right now and a fun way to express your personality and style. Start with a classic heart necklace like this one, and you can mix it in with other layering necklaces you might have. It also looks great on its own!

Q: What dresses have you seen lately that would be perfect for preference round?

A: You want to be a bit dressier this round. Here are a few dresses that I love: This blue and green dress could work for an evening cocktail event or for something during the day, which is exactly what you’re looking for! This Rhode off-the-shoulder dress is slightly more casual, but the silhouette is fun.

Q: Do you have any other style tips for recruitment week?

A: Wearing clothes that you like and feel confident in is most important! When you feel good about yourself, you’re able to put your best foot forward. I also think it’s important to find a balance between classic and trendy styles. You don’t want to lean too far into trends, but you don’t want to look too stuffy either.
