The Eglin family’s speedy home renovation is a testament to teamwork
‘We lucked out,” homeowner Kasey Eglin says of her COVID lockdown-motivated renovation, which took place over the course of seven short months. “Everything was perfectly organized and orchestrated.”
From material delays to pool construction, it’s surprising that Kasey and her husband, Will, would look back on the process with such optimism. But, Kasey notes, it was all about teamwork.
The project started after the family was confined to their home amid early pandemic restrictions in 2020. During the months spent inside, Kasey and Will realized it was time to renovate their spaces to better suit the needs of their family. Three growing teenagers and only two full bathrooms in the house provided the perfect motivation.
After living in the house for 10 years and completing two other renovations prior to this one, the Eglins already had an appreciation for the bones of the home. “It was very well built,” Kasey explains. “But as your kids grow, what you wanted when they were three is different from when they get to be 13.”
This renovation project was born out of a desire for another bathroom but grew to include a pool and new outdoor entertaining area. Commencing right after the lockdown precautions were lifted, everyone involved in the renovation, including builder Jonathan David of Jonathan David Construction and design professional Kristin Stafford, credit each other for the speed of the home revamp.
“This project was a prime example of when the entire team involved is working together cohesively, and every team member does their part,” Jonathan says. “Then it’s almost always a pleasurable experience for everyone, and everyone ends up satisfied with the end result.”
Completing a project of this scope in around seven months—including a total transformation of the backyard by adding a pool, custom landscaping and much more—is a testament to the teamwork that went on behind the scenes, especially with supply chain issues and delays caused by the pandemic. “It was really a perfectly orchestrated symphony, with something new happening every day,” Kasey says.
Timeless Southern style was at the top of the Elgins’ wish list. Working with Kristin, whom Kasey has worked with many times over the years, they were able to achieve their vision while also ensuring that the function of the spaces remained paramount.
“She helped me to think things through,” Kasey explains, noting that Kristin’s role went beyond just furnishings, as she also assisted in reviewing plans from architect Mike Sullivan. “Not just for right now, but also for five years down the road when the kids are out of the house.”
Kristin’s interior design selections ensured that the renovated portions of the home blended with both the untouched rooms and original features of the home to create a cohesive aesthetic rather than a patchwork of projects completed over the years. This sense of continuity carried over to the usability of the spaces themselves, with each being transformed to better serve the family and how they live together, in addition to accommodating the changes that would inevitably come as their children continue to grow.
“My main goal was to get things current without being trendy,” Kristin explains. “It’s really important to emphasize that the role of Jonathan and I was to execute the Eglins’ vision. It wasn’t about us or what we wanted, but how we could best reflect the family.”
Fortunately, Kristin says, Kasey is very specific and decisive when it comes to interior design and knows what suits her taste. “Her confidence in her design style was a huge help to us,” she says.
While Kasey praises Kristin and Jonathan for the fast-paced remodel, they say it wouldn’t have been possible without Kasey’s ability to make a decision and stick to it. “This shows that a project can be done in an extremely timely manner if selections are determined very early on and changes are kept to a minimum,” Jonathan says.
Although they all modestly credit each other, the renovation wouldn’t have come to fruition without the helping hands of all involved, making the project a true testament to the phrase, “Teamwork makes the dream work.” And that dream is now reality, as the Eglins have a home that will serve them for years to come in function, form and style.
