My boys had the absolute pleasure of meeting Spider-Man himself during a recent trip to Disneyland. Talk about a celebrity sighting.

From the Editor: Surfing the Web

“Spider-Man embroidery,” I typed as I breathed a long sigh and clicked “Enter.” This is my life now. And while red, black and blue aren’t my ideal color palette, I have to say; it’s growing on me. And I have my three-year-old to thank.

Spider-Man is king in my household. For some time, I didn’t know what to think. I have one sister and a lifelong, feverish obsession with anything girly. That’s why, when I had two boys, anyone who knows me was reasonably concerned. But let me tell you, I am adaptable.

First step: Watch the movies. Fall in love with Toby Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland. Easy. Have you seen the upside-down kiss that Toby shares with Kirsten Dunst?

Second step: Buy the merchandise. I am a consumer to my core, and nothing makes me happier than diving into a theme. Now, on my sons’ intricately planned toy shelf, we have a Spider-Man basket. Web shooters. Spider bots. Faux-muscle-embellished costumes. We have it all. And while I wish it stayed on the shelf, these overpriced souvenirs are usually in our living room. Such is toddler-parent life.

Third step: Meet the man himself—which we did. Duh. He’s at Avengers Campus in the heart of Disneyland’s California Adventure Park if you need to find him.

My journey into superhero-inspired madness is one that I can’t yet comment on as I am still in the thick of it. But, while I don’t yet have the advantage and wisdom of hindsight, what I can tell you is that, at least at this moment, I unequivocally do not regret the choices that have led me to a home with a revised design scheme complete with spider webs and plenty of action figures.

“With great power comes great responsibility.” French author Voltaire allegedly originated that quote. However, in my house, it can only be attributed to Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben. But, regardless of who gets the credit, the phrase is a poignant one.

I take my responsibility as a parent very seriously. And sure, that means vegetables and getting to school on time and brushing teeth and all of that. But it also means creating fun. And what is fun, if not Spider-Man temporary tattoos for the whole family?

I know that one day, I will miss the superhero costumes strewn across the couch and the themed Lego sets waiting to stab the bottoms of my feet. But a perfect home isn’t perfect without the personalities of the people who live within it.

So, even if your house isn’t plagued by Peter Parker, lean into the craziness. Embrace the unconventional. Who says action figures can’t be coffee table décor?

I wanted to end with an inspiring Marvel quote, but these heroes aren’t exactly Shakespeare. So, I’ll leave you with this: “I love you, guys.” (I’m not kidding. This is a real Spider-Man quote, according to the internet.)
