From the Archives: Let the Good Times Roll

When Mardi Gras falls late in the season, the celebrations just don’t seem to end in the Capital City. The extra weeks of balls and parades allow for a full embrace of Mardi Gras festivities—before moving right into one of Baton Rouge’s favorite events: the Wearin’ of the Green Parade.

The March 1990 issue of inRegister reflects on both traditions, some of which were brand-new. At the time, the Wearin’ of the Green Parade was still in its infancy, celebrating just its fourth year at the time of the magazine’s publication. Younger still was Karnival Krewe de Louisiane, having formed just three years prior in 1987. The 1990 ball, reigned over by Donna Saurage and Kevin Reilly Sr., who are pictured on the cover, raised some $50,000 for Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. Meanwhile, the city’s oldest krewe, Tucumcari, hosted its 43rd ball, complete with extravagant costumes and plenty of Carnival fun.

As these celebrations—and many more that fill the season—have grown and changed with time, the same joy can be felt from them. As the 1990 cover article notes, “Whatever their reasons may be for partying, they have a ball!”

Cheers to another successful Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day. Laissez les bons temps rouler!
