Dish: Zeeland Street’s Pecan Smoked Brisket with Cornbread Dressing

Cornbread dressing gets its due on family tables across the South this month, but year round you can find it at Zeeland Street alongside pecan smoked brisket, a weekday daily special at this beloved Garden District eatery.

Owner Stephanie Phares uses her grandmother’s cornbread dressing recipe, which relies on homemade cornbread, onions and rich broth drawn from the restaurant’s slow-roasted brisket and pot roast. “I learned early on that you have to use real cornbread and some kind of fresh both, whether its chicken or turkey, beef or vegetable,” says Phares. “We do a lot of beef here, so that’s what I use.”

Along with daily specials, Zeeland Street is known for its popular breakfast menu. Last year, Phares also added a stage where live singer-songwriters play during special evening concerts.
