Arts around town: Cirque du Soleil, LSU MOA’s Stories in Art, and more

Cirque du Soleil is returning to Baton Rouge today, Thursday, January 3, through Sunday, January 6, with performances of its new show Crystal at the Raising Cane’s River Center. Incorporating ice skating with the group’s trademark circus disciplines, the show delivers a different kind of winter wonderland. Tickets are showtimes are available here.


LSU Museum of Art’s first Stories in Art event is tomorrow, January 4. The kid-focused program will feature a reading of Anna at the Art Museum, as well as take-home crafts. The event is free to attend.

Tonight, January 3, at 7:30 p.m., the Manship Theatre is hosting a showing of the 2018 film Border. The Swedish film was directed by Ali Abbasi and follows the adventures of a customs officer who falls for a traveler. Tickets and more information are available here.


Artists Paul Callahan, Drew Wallace and Brad Wreyford are presenting a joint exhibition titled Trio of Trespassers at the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge’s Firehouse Gallery starting next Monday, January 7. The exhibition, which will feature sculptures and furniture, will be on display through January 30, with a special reception on Friday, January 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. More information is available here.


Manship Theatre is hosting an IFC Films double feature this Saturday, January 5, starting at 7 p.m. The showing will feature Paul Dano’s Wildlife and Henry Barrial’s DriverX. Tickets and more information are available here.

Tomorrow, January 4, through Friday, February 22, artists Jennifer Carwile and Kelsey Livingston will showcase their joint exhibition Ephemeral at Kelwood Contemporary Art. Using the imagery of a bird and nest, the artists have brought their differing styles together to create an expression of the uncertainty of life and the beauty that underlies it. A reception will be held on Saturday, January 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the gallery. More information is available here.

The Baton Rouge Gallery’s 11th Surreal Salon exhibition opens today, Thursday, January 3, and will feature the pop-surrealist work of artists from around the world. In partnership with the LSU School of Art, the annual exhibition aims to bring the eclectic style to the forefront. The exhibition will be on display through January 31, with the Surreal Salon Soirée on January 26. More information is available here.
