Spread kindness in the community by mentoring or tutoring youth, or by volunteering at BREC’s monthly social for adults with disabilities.
The organization Volunteers In Public Schools seeks individuals for its EveryBody Reads program. Volunteers meet with a student in grades K-3 throughout the school year to help build that student’s confidence in and enjoyment of reading. Training sessions will be held Feb. 1, 5 and 6. The Baton Rouge Area Sports Foundation needs help with pre- and post-race activities for the Amedisys Mardi Gras Mambo 10K and one-mile fun run. The Feb. 16 races will start at the Belle of Baton Rouge Atrium. Volunteer duties include assisting with race day registration, food distribution and racecourse support. Volunteers are also needed to help with packet pickup Feb. 14 and 15. Become a tutor, dinner parent or mentor and positively influence youth through the organization Boys Hope Girls Hope. Tutors work with scholars in grades 6-12 at least once a week on various subjects. Dinner parents prepare a meal, which can be dropped off with staff or brought in and enjoyed with scholars. Mentors see their scholar two to four times a month and talk on the phone at least once a week throughout the year. For more information, contact Audra Ray at [email protected] or 346-5095.

Help create the fun at Cupid’s Bash Feb. 15, this month’s Sunshine Social. Through a partnership with Families Helping Families of Greater Baton Rouge, BREC is able to offer monthly socials for adults with disabilities and their friends and family. Volunteers are needed to help with setup, refreshments and activities. There will be a disc jockey, snacks, door prizes and, of course, socialization and fun.
