From the Archives: Winter Whirl

Mid-winter in the Capital City is a blur of activity as soon-to-be raucous revelers finalize costumes and plans for the swiftly approaching Carnival celebration. And just as Mardi Gras krewes practice their routines ahead of marching through the streets, ladies and gentlemen taking lessons at local dance studios prepare for recitals set for the spring season.

Showcasing this uniquely busy season, when it seems the rest of the country is slowing down due to snowy conditions, Arthur Murray School of Dance of Baton Rouge owners Mr. and Mrs. Charles Miller posed while dancing on a terrace in the moonlight for the cover of the February 1, 1964, issue of The Register. The accompanying article highlights both the bustle of the mid-winter season and Baton Rouge business owners’ long-held commitment to supporting philanthropic efforts.

As noted in the article, the couple generously donated an Arthur Murray School of Dance Scholarship as a prize for the Mad Hatters Lunch and Style Show, the Baton Rouge Symphony League’s long-standing fundraiser, in early February. Later in the short month, Mrs. Miller would serve as a model for the Baton Rouge Quota Club’s style show benefitting the Speech and Hearing Foundation, now The Emerge Center. Both organizations and their signature style shows still continue today thanks to the professionals who dedicate their time, talent and funds to make our community a better place for every resident. Come snow or sunny weather, the winter season has always been a busy one for the philanthropic community in Baton Rouge.
